From the founder: Understanding Differences

FlourishTalk: adjacent decks. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

The Understanding Differences deck is for students and teachers learning and teaching in diverse classrooms, for anyone widening their view of the world through study or travel, and for families talking across generations and cultures.

It helps you meet people whose backgrounds, values and ways of being differ from yours with curiosity, respect and appreciation, because differences bring new perspectives and better ideas. It leans on cultural humility: no one is the expert on another person's experience, and staying curious matters more than claiming to understand completely. It also moves from awareness to action, adapting how you communicate and helping others feel that they belong.

Each card holds one question from eight domains: Personality Differences, Communication Style Differences, Neurodiversity & Cognitive Differences, Cultural Differences, Generational Differences, Values & Worldview Differences, Social Identity Differences, and Building Bridges Across Differences. A card for a class might ask what helps you create space for both spontaneous brainstorming and quiet reflection; another, how you adapt your communication when you work across cultural differences. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.

I suggest a study group or class begins with Communication Style Differences, which any group project calls on, and ends with Building Bridges Across Differences, where understanding turns into action.
