The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) deck is for students of all ages building the skills behind learning, relationships and wellbeing, for teachers creating a supportive classroom climate and modelling those skills, and for parents growing them at home.
Social-emotional learning is the process through which young people and adults develop healthy identities, manage emotions, reach personal and shared goals, show empathy, keep supportive relationships and make responsible, caring decisions. Learning and social and emotional skill are closely connected, and these skills grow through practice, reflection and conversation rather than lectures.
Each card holds one question on the five core competencies of a well-known framework for social and emotional learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. A Self-Awareness card might ask what emotions you are noticing right now and what they might be telling you; a Self-Management card, what helps you stay motivated when working toward a difficult goal; a Relationship Skills card, what helps you navigate conflict constructively. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.
I suggest you begin with Self-Awareness, the foundation the other four build on, and use one card at a time in a class, a family conversation or your own journal. If you want to practise these skills step by step, the course SEL Catchup on the student pathway turns the same five competencies into small skills with a practice log.
