The Habits of Mind deck is for students of all ages finding better ways to learn, study and solve problems, for the teacher who models these habits and draws them out in class discussion, and for the parent who explores a problem together with a child.
Habits of mind are dispositions toward behaving intelligently when the answer is not immediately known. They shift the focus from what you know to how you act when you do not yet know, and they put one question at the centre: what is the most intelligent thing I can do right now? They are learnable and grow through practice, reflection and conscious use, so each conversation strengthens one of them.
Each card holds one question on the sixteen habits, among them Persisting, Managing Impulsivity, Thinking About Thinking, Questioning and Posing Problems, Taking Responsible Risks, which accepts confusion and uncertainty as part of learning, and Remaining Open to Continuous Learning. A card for a class might ask what strategies help you persist when learning becomes difficult; one for a parent and child, how looking at this problem from a different angle might help. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.
I suggest you begin with Persisting, the first habit, and bring a card to the next problem you cannot yet solve. A teacher can open a lesson with a single card and let students learn from one another's approaches.
