From the founder: Academic Success

FlourishTalk: the Thinking & Learning decks. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

The Academic Success deck is for the student at university or college in any season: the first-year setting up patterns that work, the student returning after a break, the postgraduate carrying a long project, and the study group that wants a structured conversation about how its members learn. It also serves advisors, student success staff, parents and mentors who support a student with questions rather than advice.

It helps you see which parts of your study are going well and which ask for attention, and choose where to grow. You do not need to develop everything at once; one question, explored in depth, can change how you approach your work.

Each card holds one question on twenty-four factors that research links with success in higher education, in six categories: Cognitive & Learning Factors such as Learning Strategies and Working Memory & Focus; Motivational & Goal Factors such as Academic Self-Efficacy and Grit & Perseverance; Self-Regulation & Character; Emotional & Social Factors such as Stress Management and Academic Identity; Wellbeing & Balance; and Positive Psychology & Intelligence. A card might ask how you know when you have truly understood something rather than just memorised it. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.

I suggest you journal on one question a day, or open each study group meeting with a single card that each person at the table answers.
