From the founder: Clear Thinking & Better Decisions

FlourishTalk: the Thinking & Learning decks. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

The Clear Thinking & Better Decisions deck is for the learner who is curious about how their own mind handles information and choices: a student weighing a decision, a study group that wants to question its assumptions, and the teacher who invites a class to look at how thinking itself works.

It explores cognitive biases in a growth-oriented, non-judgmental way, as mental shortcuts that serve you well in some settings and mislead you in others. The emphasis is on metacognition, thinking about thinking, and on intellectual humility: recognising the limits of what you know, staying open to new information and acknowledging when you might be wrong. In study that means processing information more critically, planning more realistically and noticing why an important task gets put off.

Each card holds one question from nine domains. Better Decisions looks at confirmation bias, anchoring and the sunk cost fallacy; Learning & Information at the framing effect and the curse of knowledge; Planning & Action at the planning fallacy and present bias; Risk & Probability at the gambler's fallacy and survivorship bias. A card for a classroom might ask what makes us more confident in our answers than we should be. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.

I suggest a student begins with Learning & Information, and with Planning & Action when a deadline is near. To start, choose the deck, enter your name at checkout and draw a card when your PDFs arrive.
